For the Sonorous
WoC
To you,
Only blood is keeping us alive.
Running throughout our body,
Creating a red river,
River of red blood cells that provide the oxygen
I need to survive.
But to us?
To us it is more than just red liquid,
More than just the oxygen we take in that keeps us going.
In us is culture.
Culture of values,
The importance of toughing out the storm
of misogyny to reach the light of equality.
Culture of morals,
Learning of the love that we are able to send
with just our fingertips.
Culture of unity,
Women holding hands,
Our palms touching and the fingers
intertwining creating a shared warmth,
Bracing for the fight against the patriarchy,
A fight against a world where men are believed
to be the most enlightened and most successful,
A fight we are ready to win.
Our hearts pump and pump,
Pumps of ancestry we have yet to learn about.
We are our ancestors.
We are our culture.
We are women of color.
